Pepco(al) under fire for electricity from coal
Pepco(al) battles with Wind Power in this DC Rising Tide showdown in front of the Pepco Holdings Inc. headquarters in Washington DC on October 26th. Pepco delivers most of its electricity to DC residents from coal, including coal mined by blowing up mountains and shoving the fill into valleys and streams in Appalachia (mountaintop removal coal mining). The company only provides 0.5% of its electricity to DC residents from wind power.
DC Rising Tide Crashes Coal Conference
Activists with DC Rising Tide interrupted a coal industry conference on March 26, 2009 to denounce coal-to-liquids as a corporate scam that would continue the destructive path of the fossil fuel industry. They hung a banner saying "Coal Takes Lives," -- mimicking the World Coal-to-Liquid conference abbreviation CTL -- and called for clean, green, renewable energy. The activists took turns rising to admonish the fossil fuels industry before being escorted out of the building by hotel security. The advocates of clean energy blasted the coal schemers with fiery speeches in the middle of a panel by executives from coal and oil industry groups including the World Coal Institute, Chevron, the World Petroleum Council, and Consol Energy. Three activists who locked arms were detained and forbidden from returning to the Mayflower hotel.
